The Siamese Algae Eater makes a helpful and active addition to many community aquariums. This freshwater fish comes from Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, where it lives in streams and rivers with plenty of plants.
In aquariums, Siamese Algae Eaters often graze on hair algae. They may also rest or perch on décor, plants, or other tank surfaces.

Siamese Algae Eaters can fit well in many peaceful community setups because they are generally calm and social. They can live alone or in groups when the tank has enough space.
Siamese Algae Eater care notes:
- Often grazes on hair algae
- Also eats flakes, pellets, and algae wafers
- Can live singly or in groups
- Usually reaches about 4 inches, though some may grow up to 6 inches
- Best suited for peaceful community aquariums
Note: Companion fish do not fluoresce, but they make a great addition to a community tank.
Set-Up Your Tank
- Make sure it all works: We suggest your tank be set-up for at least 24 hours before ordering fish to ensure all equipment is working.
- Use a heater: GloFish® fish enjoy tropical temperatures of 76-80F.
- Make Them Shine Their Brightest: GloFish® fish absorb light and then re-emit it, so their unique fluorescent colors will appear brighter and more vibrant as the amount of light is increased. So the more blue light you have the more your fish will shine!
Add Your Fish
- Follow this acclimation guide to make sure they adjust to their new home.
Feed Your Fish
- Feed two to three times daily, in small amounts, only as much as your fish can eat in a minute or so.
- Danios, tetras, and barbs GloFish Special Flake food or GloFish® MicroCrisp Food
- GloFish® Sharks and Cory Catfish need GloFish® Wafers.
- Treat all your fish to GloFish® Daphnia Treat that aids in digestion.
